Three months ago, my father passed away. Now my mother is suffering in great pain from a severe cancer. According to the doctors, she has only about five months left to live. I have one younger sister who is still in school, so as the eldest in the family, I started doing daily wage labor. However, I cannot afford both my mother’s medicines and our household food expenses.

My sister and I try not to let our mother know how bad things are. We give her the food we have, hoping to keep her happy for as long as she lives. For the past two days, my sister and I have had nothing to eat because there’s no work available every day, and now we have no money at all. Out of desperation, I borrowed a little rice from a neighbor so I could make some rice porridge for my mother and hide our hunger from her.
