Description
OGELO COMMUNITY BOREHOLE AND WATER SUPPLY PROJECT

Project Location: Ogelo Village, Rachuonyo East Sub-County, Homa Bay County, Kenya

Estimated Population Benefiting: Approximately 4,000 people

Primary Institutions:

Gangre Primary School
Gangre Secondary School
Kakiri Assembly for the Study of Christ

Funding Requested: KES 8,000,000

1. Executive Summary

We are seeking financial support to establish a reliable and sustainable water supply for the residents of Ogelo Village in Rachuonyo East Sub-County, Homa Bay County.

Approximately 4,000 people in the area, together with pupils and staff of Gangre Primary School and Gangre Secondary School and members of local community institutions, would benefit directly from the proposed project.

The project will involve the development of a borehole and associated water infrastructure to provide a dependable source of safe water for domestic use and for the participating schools and community institutions.

We are seeking KES 8,000,000 to cover the necessary technical investigations, borehole drilling and equipping, solar-powered pumping, water storage and distribution infrastructure, and related project costs.

We respectfully invite philanthropists, charitable foundations, development organisations, corporate social responsibility programmes and government/community development partners to support this project.

2. Background and Need

Access to reliable and safe water remains an important challenge for many rural communities in Homa Bay County.

The people of Ogelo Village require a dependable water source that can serve households as well as important community institutions. Schools in particular require reliable water for drinking, sanitation, cleaning and maintaining a healthy learning environment.

Gangre Primary School and Gangre Secondary School serve children from the surrounding community. A reliable water source would therefore have benefits extending beyond individual households to the education and welfare of children in the area.

The proposed borehole will also provide a valuable community water point and support the water needs of local institutions, including Kakiri Assembly for the Study of Christ and other community institutions.

3. Project Goal

To improve access to safe, reliable and sustainable water for approximately 4,000 people and key community institutions in Ogelo Village, Rachuonyo East, Homa Bay County.

4. Project Objectives

The project aims to:

Drill and develop a productive borehole in Ogelo Village.
Equip the borehole with an appropriate pumping system.
Install a sustainable solar-powered water pumping system where technically feasible.
Provide adequate water storage facilities.
Establish water distribution points accessible to the surrounding community.
Improve access to water for Gangre Primary School and Gangre Secondary School.
Support the water needs of local community institutions.
Establish a sustainable community management and maintenance system.
5. Target Beneficiaries

The project is expected to benefit approximately 4,000 residents of Ogelo and the surrounding area.

Direct institutional beneficiaries include:

Gangre Primary School
Gangre Secondary School
Kakiri Assembly for the Study of Christ
Other local community institutions
Households within the project's water-service area
The project is expected to particularly benefit children, women, elderly people and other residents who currently face challenges obtaining reliable water.

6. Proposed Project Components

Subject to the findings of a qualified hydrogeological survey and technical assessment, the project will include:

Hydrogeological survey and site assessment
Borehole drilling
Borehole casing and development
Water-quality testing
Pump installation
Solar-powered pumping system
Elevated water storage
Water distribution infrastructure
Community water access points
Connections to participating institutions where technically and financially feasible
Community training and water-management arrangements
The final technical specifications and quantities should be determined by qualified professionals following the hydrogeological survey and borehole drilling requirements.

7. Estimated Project Budget

Total funding requirement: KES 8,000,000

A detailed contractor/engineer's bill of quantities will be obtained before implementation. The proposed budget categories are:

Component

Estimated Allocation

Hydrogeological survey, technical assessment and approvals

KES 400,000

Borehole drilling, casing and development

KES 2,200,000

Pumping equipment and installation

KES 700,000

The above is a preliminary fundraising budget and should be replaced or refined using quotations and a professional bill of quantities before submission to a major donor.

8. Sustainability

To ensure that the project continues serving the community after construction, a community water-management structure will be established.

The management structure will be responsible for:

Routine operation and maintenance
Protection of the borehole and associated infrastructure
Collection of appropriate user contributions where necessary
Maintaining financial records
Organising repairs
Monitoring water quality
Ensuring equitable access to the water resource
The use of solar pumping, where technically appropriate, is intended to reduce recurring energy costs and improve the long-term sustainability of the project.

9. Community Participation

The community will be encouraged to participate in the project through:

Provision of appropriate local support and labour where possible
Participation in project oversight
Protection of the water infrastructure
Formation/strengthening of a water-management committee
Contributions towards routine maintenance after project completion
Community ownership will be an important part of ensuring that the investment remains functional for many years.

10. Expected Results

Upon successful completion, the project is expected to:

Provide a new reliable source of water for approximately 4,000 people.
Improve access to water at Gangre Primary School.
Improve access to water at Gangre Secondary School.
Support Kakiri Assembly for the Study of Christ and other community institutions.
Reduce the time and effort required to obtain water.
Improve hygiene and sanitation conditions.
Contribute to a healthier and more productive community.
Establish a sustainable local system for managing the water infrastructure.
11. Funding Appeal

We respectfully appeal to philanthropists, charitable foundations, development partners, corporate organisations, faith-based organisations and government agencies to partner with the people of Ogelo in making this project possible.

A contribution towards this project would represent an investment in water, health, education and the future of approximately 4,000 people.

The project can also be supported through partial funding or in-kind contributions toward specific components such as drilling, solar equipment, water storage or distribution infrastructure.

12. Conclusion

The Ogelo Community Borehole and Water Supply Project presents an opportunity to address a fundamental need affecting thousands of people.

We therefore seek a funding partnership of KES 8,000,000 to develop a sustainable water source and supporting infrastructure for the community.
