This stray cat lives in my friend’s building in Cairo. One eye is completely gone. The remaining eye is blind and severely damaged from feline herpesvirus infection, causing deep corneal ulcers and constant pain.
The blind eye causes ongoing pain because the damaged cornea has exposed nerves and chronic inflammation. Every movement and blink hurts the cat.
Surgical removal of the painful blind eye (enucleation) is necessary to eliminate the pain, stop the infection from spreading, and improve his quality of life. Cats adapt well after this procedure.
