Balsam – The Lebanese Center for Palliative Care – is a nongovernmental organization founded in 2010. Through patient care, Balsam aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life of people living with serious illness. We believe that no one should live in pain, fear or die alone. Composed of a team of multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, Balsam offers management of physical symptoms, as well as psychosocial and spiritual support to both the patient and their family.
Since the end of 2019, with the outbreak of COVID 19, the deteriorating economic and financial situation throughout Lebanon and the August 4 explosion, sustaining work at Balsam has been quite a challenge. However, despite these difficulties, Balsam’s team demonstrated the utmost commitment and dedication. Nothing deterred us from tending to our patients’ needs – whether road closures, street violence, the pandemic, the financial meltdown, the fuel and gas crises – nothing stopped the Balsam team from caring for their patients, and their families, and helping them to improve their quality of life for as long as needed.
