Dignity in the Final Chapter

Dignity in the Final Chapter
Circle of Life (COL) is a community care programme operating on Idjwi Island in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded in June 2019 by Mwema Jimmy, COL visits over 200 elderly men and women every month — bringing food, repairing homes, and ensuring that no one dies undiscovered and alone. Circle of Life operates as a project of PROLASA International (Programme International des Laïcs pour la Santé), a registered international NGO with over 40 years of humanitarian work in the DRC, headquartered in Canada with operational offices in Goma, North Kivu. PROLASA holds a Framework Agreement with the DRC Ministry of Planning (signed March 2021) and has been a recognised development actor on Idjwi Island for decades. Who We Serve Idjwi Island is the second-largest lake island in Africa, home to over 200,000 people, reachable only by boat, and entirely outside the reach of national social protection systems. There is no government pension, no elderly care infrastructure, and no other NGO dedicated to its ageing population. My name is Mwema Jimmy. I live on Idjwi Island, in the middle of Lake Kivu, eastern Congo — one of the bigest Seven years ago, I started an NGO called Circle of Life because I could not look away from what was happening around me. The young people of Idjwi are leaving — to Bukavu, to Goma, to Kinshasa to look for jobs and opportunities. What they leave behind are their parents and grandparents. Old people in their seventies, eighties, nineties. Completely alone. No pension. No welfare. No one whose job it is to check on them. No one — except my team and me. For seven years, every month, I have used a portion of my own small salary to buy food and fuel. My volunteers and I visit over 200 elderly people. We bring corn flour for their porridge. We sit with them. We repair their broken roofs. We check that they are still alive. Sometimes, they are not. I have arrived at a home and found someone who had been dead for a week. A whole week. Alone. Undiscovered. No one had known. I visit a woman who cannot move herself. Every morning a neighbour carries her outside and leaves her in the sun. If he comes back that evening, she is brought inside. If not — she stays through the night. Exposed. Immobile. Alone. Unable to call for anyone. When I come and sit with her, she takes my hand and does not want to let go. I have seen people who own one set of clothing. People sleeping on straw on floors that flood when it rains. People with TB and infected wounds and no one to take them for care. People who have not spoken to another human being since the last time I came. There is no government for them here. There is no other NGO. There is nothing — except us, on almost no money, every single month. I run a small corn milling business on the island. When the mill runs properly, it earns a profit. That profit is everything: the food I bring, the medicine I buy, the roofs I fix, the blankets I carry. The machines exist. What I need is the operational funding — fuel, maintenance, working capital — to keep it running. I have the machines. I have the volunteers. I have seven years of trust built with these communities. What I do not have is enough funds to do this properly.

"One Roof" A voluntary solidarity initiative aimed at providing support for those displaced by the ongoing Israeli war on Lebanon. Based on the belief that housing and security are fundamental rights for all, and in response to the needs of displaced individuals affected by Israeli aggressions, the "One Roof" initiative was launched during the last war in 2023 and 2024 (see the Report: https://www.instagram.com/p/DIBS9-FtMFU/?img_index=1) and was reactivated with the renewal of the war on March 2, 2026. The initiative began with the goal of providing temporary free housing for the displaced by connecting them with individuals willing to host them. It is believed that community solidarity is an act of resilience and resistance to maintain a cohesive society under "One Roof." However, the increasing number of displaced individuals has made it more challenging to secure free housing or even affordable rental options. Therefore, the initiative now seeks to collect donations for the following goals: ▪️To provide the needs of families who have been provided with housing. ▪️To rent and equip new spaces to convert them into collective shelter centers. ▪️To meet the needs of the families who will benefit from these centers. Join us! Your support for the "One Roof" initiative is a step toward preserving the dignity of affected families and ensuring their right to safety and housing. With your donations, we can provide shelter for those in dire need and enhance their resilience in the face of these crises. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a significant difference. Let us unite under "One Roof" and share the responsibility.

Emergency Wildlife Rescue Center – Lebanon

Emergency Wildlife Rescue Center – Lebanon
As instability rises, roads close, borders shut down, and supply chains become uncertain. Wildlife emergencies do not stop during war. In many cases they increase. Lebanese Wildlife is the only certified wildlife rehabilitation authority in the country. Injured, confiscated, and displaced wild animals depend on our ability to continue operating safely. For years, our rescue and rehabilitation work has operated from a home based setup while responding to wildlife emergencies across Lebanon. Recently, we secured 2,000 square meters of land to build the country’s first dedicated wildlife rehabilitation center, which will become the foundation of Lebanon’s first wildlife hospital. This was meant to be a long term project. But the return of war has forced us to accelerate. Our current operational location is no longer secure enough to guarantee the safety of the animals in our care or the continuity of our rescue operations. If roads close or supplies become unavailable, our ability to care for wildlife could be severely compromised. To protect the animals and ensure that rescue work can continue, we must urgently activate part of the secured land and relocate our operations to a safer site. Phase 1 of this project will activate 800 square meters of the land using prefabricated structures and essential infrastructure so that the facility can begin operating as soon as possible. Our goal is to raise 120,000 USD to make this emergency relocation possible. This funding will allow us to install prefabricated clinic and intake units, ICU and quarantine structures, secure temporary enclosures, electricity and water systems, generator backup power, and the essential infrastructure required to operate safely. It will also allow us to transport animals and medical equipment and to stockpile critical food and medications in case borders close and supply chains are interrupted. Wildlife in Lebanon already faces immense pressure from habitat loss, illegal hunting, and wildlife trafficking. War multiplies every threat. If Lebanese Wildlife cannot operate safely, injured and confiscated wildlife will have nowhere to go. There is no alternative wildlife rehabilitation center in the country. This emergency phase will allow us to establish a safe operational base and continue rescuing wildlife while laying the groundwork for the full rehabilitation center that will be developed in the future. Wildlife does not get to escape war. Animals cannot leave when borders close or when conflict spreads. They depend entirely on the people willing to protect them. Lebanese Wildlife has never stopped responding to animals in need, even during the most difficult times. Today we are asking for your help to make sure that work can continue safely. By supporting this campaign, you are helping create a secure refuge for wildlife in a country where such a place has never existed before. Together we can ensure that even in the midst of conflict, compassion and protection for wildlife do not disappear. Every contribution helps bring this safe haven to life.
