How the Environment Impacts Health and the Economy A healthy environment is the foundation for both a strong body and a strong financial system. When the environment suffers, both our physical well-being and our bank accounts feel the pressure. 1. Environmental Impact on Health The environment acts as our life-support system. When it is clean, we thrive; when it is polluted, we face significant risks. • Clean Air: High air quality reduces the prevalence of respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and lung cancer. It also lowers the risk of heart disease and strokes. • Safe Water: Access to clean water is essential for preventing waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and typhoid. • Food Security: Healthy soil and stable climates ensure a steady supply of nutritious food, preventing malnutrition and related health issues. • Mental Well-being: Access to green spaces (parks, forests) is scientifically proven to lower stress, anxiety, and depression. 2. Environmental Impact on the Economy Economics often looks at the environment as "natural capital." If we deplete this capital, the economy eventually slows down or becomes more expensive to maintain. • Resource Productivity: Industries like agriculture, fishing, and forestry depend directly on healthy ecosystems. Soil degradation or overfishing leads to job losses and higher food prices. • Cost Savings (Healthcare): A cleaner environment means fewer people in hospitals. This saves governments and individuals billions in medical bills and keeps the workforce healthy and productive. • Disaster Mitigation: Healthy environments, like mangroves and wetlands, act as natural barriers against floods and storms. This prevents the massive costs associated with rebuilding infrastructure after a natural disaster. • Tourism: Many countries rely on their natural beauty (beaches, mountains, wildlife) to attract international tourists, which brings in significant foreign currency.
