Help Us Launch 'Barely A Dog Rescue'
i, my name is Vanessa, also known as Girl With The Dogs, and I’m starting Barely A Dog Rescue after years of witnessing a heartbreaking pattern while working as a professional pet groomer. Throughout my career, I’ve seen pets go without basic grooming and veterinary care simply because their owners could not afford it. These were not cases of neglect. These were people who loved their animals deeply but were overwhelmed by the cost of care. In many of those situations, I personally covered grooming or veterinary expenses because I could not stand to see an animal suffer when help was possible. As my platform grew, so did the number of people reaching out from around the world asking for help with veterinary bills, grooming costs, or emergency care for pets they loved. I’ve continued to help wherever I could, quietly and without judgment, but the reality is that I cannot keep doing this alone. The need is simply too great, and the costs have become overwhelming. That is why I decided to build something sustainable. Barely A Dog Rescue will be a foster-based rescue focused on pulling very small dogs under 7 lbs from shelters and placing them into safe, loving foster homes. Many tiny dogs face ongoing medical needs, and with the right support, they can truly thrive. Rescue, however, is only part of the mission. Barely A Dog Rescue will also provide financial relief for veterinary care and grooming costs to pet owners experiencing financial hardship. This assistance will not be limited to small dogs and may support both dogs and cats whose families need help accessing essential care. Too often, loving pet owners are forced into impossible choices. They want to do the right thing for their pets, but rising veterinary and grooming costs make care feel out of reach. Many animals are surrendered not because they are unwanted, but because their people simply cannot afford the help they need. This rescue exists to help keep pets with the people who love them, while also stepping in when rescue and foster care is the safest option. Our approach is rooted in compassion, dignity, and zero judgment. This is about helping animals without shaming the people who care for them. What Your Support Will Help Fund Your donations will help cover the startup and early operating costs of Barely A Dog Rescue, including: • Licensing, insurance, legal, and nonprofit setup costs • Veterinary care for rescued dogs and cats • Foster support and supplies • Emergency medical assistance for dogs and cats in need • Grooming assistance to support health and comfort • Website development Every contribution helps turn years of individual efforts into a structured rescue that can help more animals, more consistently, and more responsibly. Why This Matters Sometimes help means pulling a tiny dog from a shelter into foster care. Sometimes it means helping a family afford a vet visit so they do not have to surrender a beloved pet. Sometimes it simply means showing people that they are not alone. This fundraiser is about transforming compassion into action and building a safety net for pets and the people who love them. Once the charity is fully established in Ontario, the goal is to expand into the United States as well, so we can help even more animals and families. If you are able to donate, thank you from the bottom of my heart. If you cannot donate right now, sharing this fundraiser helps more than you may realize. Together, we can keep pets healthy, supported, and right where they belong. Thank you for believing in Barely A Dog Rescue at the very beginning. Important Information About This Fundraiser This fundraiser is for personal gifts to support Vanessa in her work to establish a future animal rescue charity. At this time, the nonprofit entity is not yet incorporated or registered as a charity in Canada or the United States. As such: • All funds raised through this Fundahope campaign are personal gifts to Vanessa, intended solely to support the startup and administrative costs involved in forming a nonprofit animal rescue. • These funds are not tax-deductible in Canada or the United States. Contributions to this fundraiser should not be considered charitable donations. • Funds raised will be used for early-stage startup expenses such as legal and incorporation fees, administrative setup, supplies, and other preparatory costs required to launch the rescue. • All funds from this campaign are being kept separate from personal spending and are tracked specifically for charity startup purposes. • Once the nonprofit is formally incorporated, all future fundraising will be conducted directly by the legal entity, not through personal fundraising platforms. Thank you for supporting the early groundwork required to build a responsible, transparent, and compliant animal rescue organization.

Equipping Lebanon's First Responders 2026

Solidarity with Lebanon

Equipping Lebanon's First Responders 2026
March 2026: We are fundraising to equip Lebanon’s national first responders - The Civil Defense (الدفاع المدني) with essential and life-saving supplies. Hundreds of Israeli airstrikes have hit Lebanon over the past six days, resulting in tens of thousands of people being displaced, over 100 villages and towns being declared military zones, and—at the time of writing—more than 200 people killed. The violence is ongoing, placing the Lebanese Civil Defense once again on the front lines. They are the first to arrive at the scenes of the strikes, even when the unimaginable happens. We urgently need to be there for them. And your support provides the critical resources these first responders need to keep vital rescue operations moving during this, unfortunately, precedented escalation. Almost three years on, they continue to operate under unimaginable pressure, responding to emergencies with limited and almost no resources while risking, sometimes even sacrificing, their lives to rescue civilians, provide first aid, and clear debris from devastated areas. Despite the prolonged nature of the conflict, their work never stopped and the ongoing aggression has intensified the demands of their job. Ensuring they are equipped and supported remains an urgent need to sustain their lifesaving efforts and protect themselves and communities across the country. We started this fundraiser in 2024 and have been able to secure a significant amount of funds for the Lebanese Civil Defense; we were able to purchase required equipment for a variety of centers across the country. This equipment saved lives and protected first responders. Today, we find ourselves in this situation, yet again, with centers all over the country in need of immediate support. We are reactivating this campaign to raise funds and purchase required equipment. **What will this campaign do? How many first responders and firefighters will you equip? What has this campaign already done?** Your donations will be used to purchase equipment and meet the urgent needs of as many civil defense units as possible, based on our resources and their needs. In our past campaign, we were able to work with the following civil defense units at different capacities: Sour and Derdghaiya (Tyre), Baalbek, Bidnayel and Aarsal (Baalbek), Hrajel (Mount Lebanon), Kfarshima and Mreijeh (Baabda), Deir Al-Ahmar (Bekaa), Bachoura and Ras Beirut (Beirut). With your support, our last campaign raised $89,973 that went towards vehicles, boots, operation costs, firefighting equipment including bulletproof helmets, outfits, and boots, rescue equipment including ambulance set-ups and first aid supplies. The Lebanese Civil Defense has 208 centers across the country. Civil Defense duties include disaster response, providing emergency first aid, ambulance services, evacuating civilians in the event of crises, enforcing public safety, and putting out fires. Volunteers are on call round the clock, seven days a week and you can reach them by dialing 125 from any phone in Lebanon. Your involvement (even by just spreading the word!) will remind our first responders that they are not alone. As the aggression continues we also want to reflect on the work that continues to give our communities hope and keeps us working in solidarity with one another towards a better future. **Who is managing this campaign?** This campaign is managed by a group of concerned residents who are long-time grassroots organizers in Beirut. We are compelled to try and support the Civil Defense in the face of economic, political, and military aggression. **How can we send the donation?** If you are in Beirut, one of the campaign managers can meet you wherever it is convenient. WHISH Money transfers and Western Union are also options. You can send your WHISH Money transfers or Western Union transfers to: + Rami Rajeh (+961-3-428066), + Bana Bashour (+961-3-059327), or + Yusra Bitar (+961-70-459066) **How will the Civil Defense receive my donation?** Your donation will be directly transferred to a volunteer procurement team on the ground who will purchase the equipment and hand them directly to the Civil Defense centers. **How can we make sure the donations actually reach the Civil Defense?** The whole operation will be managed through transparent procurement procedures, where all receipts and invoices are documented and shared with donors. Every piece of equipment has the power to rescue and protect lives. We are filled with gratitude for the courage of our Civil Defense volunteers and for the solidarity of people like you around the world who made much of their work possible. Dignity in the Final Chapter

Dignity in the Final Chapter
Circle of Life (COL) is a community care programme operating on Idjwi Island in the South Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Founded in June 2019 by Mwema Jimmy, COL visits over 200 elderly men and women every month — bringing food, repairing homes, and ensuring that no one dies undiscovered and alone. Circle of Life operates as a project of PROLASA International (Programme International des Laïcs pour la Santé), a registered international NGO with over 40 years of humanitarian work in the DRC, headquartered in Canada with operational offices in Goma, North Kivu. PROLASA holds a Framework Agreement with the DRC Ministry of Planning (signed March 2021) and has been a recognised development actor on Idjwi Island for decades. Who We Serve Idjwi Island is the second-largest lake island in Africa, home to over 200,000 people, reachable only by boat, and entirely outside the reach of national social protection systems. There is no government pension, no elderly care infrastructure, and no other NGO dedicated to its ageing population. My name is Mwema Jimmy. I live on Idjwi Island, in the middle of Lake Kivu, eastern Congo — one of the bigest Seven years ago, I started an NGO called Circle of Life because I could not look away from what was happening around me. The young people of Idjwi are leaving — to Bukavu, to Goma, to Kinshasa to look for jobs and opportunities. What they leave behind are their parents and grandparents. Old people in their seventies, eighties, nineties. Completely alone. No pension. No welfare. No one whose job it is to check on them. No one — except my team and me. For seven years, every month, I have used a portion of my own small salary to buy food and fuel. My volunteers and I visit over 200 elderly people. We bring corn flour for their porridge. We sit with them. We repair their broken roofs. We check that they are still alive. Sometimes, they are not. I have arrived at a home and found someone who had been dead for a week. A whole week. Alone. Undiscovered. No one had known. I visit a woman who cannot move herself. Every morning a neighbour carries her outside and leaves her in the sun. If he comes back that evening, she is brought inside. If not — she stays through the night. Exposed. Immobile. Alone. Unable to call for anyone. When I come and sit with her, she takes my hand and does not want to let go. I have seen people who own one set of clothing. People sleeping on straw on floors that flood when it rains. People with TB and infected wounds and no one to take them for care. People who have not spoken to another human being since the last time I came. There is no government for them here. There is no other NGO. There is nothing — except us, on almost no money, every single month. I run a small corn milling business on the island. When the mill runs properly, it earns a profit. That profit is everything: the food I bring, the medicine I buy, the roofs I fix, the blankets I carry. The machines exist. What I need is the operational funding — fuel, maintenance, working capital — to keep it running. I have the machines. I have the volunteers. I have seven years of trust built with these communities. What I do not have is enough funds to do this properly.
