In late February 2026, the southeastern Brazilian state of Minas Gerais has faced catastrophic flooding and landslides, especially in the Zona da Mata region, including Juiz de Fora and nearby cities like Ubá. Record rainfall has poured hundreds of millimeters of rain in just hours, far exceeding normal levels for this time of year.
These storms caused rivers to overflow, roads and bridges to collapse, and whole neighborhoods to be submerged or wiped out by landslides. Many homes have been destroyed, leaving thousands of people displaced, homeless, and in urgent need of basic supplies.
Tragically, the flooding and landslides have already resulted in a significant loss of life, with dozens of confirmed fatalities and others still missing. Emergency teams continue working tirelessly around the clock to find survivors and bring aid to those in need.
Families in the region are struggling without shelter, clean water, food, medical care, and other essentials. Infrastructure like water systems, electricity, and transportation has been heavily damaged in many areas, making recovery even harder.
